Awami League presidium member Matia Chowdhury passes away

Begum Motida Chowdhury, a member of the Awami League presidium, passed away and died at Everkeer Hospital in the capital on Wednesday around 1 pm.

Everketter Hospital General Manager Arif Mahmud and former Minister and Matia Chowdhury's uncle Mustafa Jamal Hadadar confirmed the death.

Motita Chowdhury was born on June 30, 1942 in Pirojpur.

His father Mohiuddin Ahmed Chowdhury was a police officer and mother Nurjahan Begum was a housewife. On June 18, 1964, Motida Chowdhury got married to famous journalist Bazlur Rahman. 

He got involved in student politics while studying at Eden College and was elected president of Bangladesh Students Union in 1965.

Matia, known as ‘Agniknya’, joined the East Pakistan National Awami Party in 1967 and became a member of its working committee. In the middle of 1970 and 1971, he was an active participant in Bangladesh's freedom struggle, campaigning, lobbying and nursing the injured. In 1971, he became the organizing secretary of the Awami League. He was arrested several times during the tenure of President Ziaur Rahman and President Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

Motida Chowdhury served as Agriculture Minister during the Awami League regime in 1996 and 2009 and 2013. He was last serving as a member of the 1st presidium of the Awami League.
