49 migrants die in boat sinking on the coast of Yemen

At least 49 migrants have died in boating off the coast of IOM, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Some of the passengers who survived said that their boat was a total of 260 migrants. The boat sank due to the storm on Monday.

It is reported that 140 people are missing, and search is being conducted to find them, IOM reports, they have been rescued and 71 have been assisted, and eight have been taken to hospital.

The local authorities in Rudam district east of Aden said that those who were boats were immigrants, most of them are Ethiopaters, and immigrants use the country as a transit to go to the Gulf countries.

Rudam district director Hadi al-Khurma told news agency RATTERS that the boat sank before it reached the beach.

Local fishermen and residents were able to rescue the survivors, and migrants reported their fellow passengers who were the same boat, said Al-Khurma.

He said the investigation is ongoing and the United Nations has been informed about the incident.

In a statement on Tuesday, IOM spokesperson Mohammad Ali Abunazela said, the recent tragedy reminded us once again of the need to work together to deal with the emergency immigration challenge.

According to the United Nations, 97,000 migrants went to Ithmen from the Horn of Africa last year, despite the war in Yemen and the attacks by the Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.
