Awami League leader dies in police torture

Another Awami League leader dies in Bogra prison! Since August 5, four Awami League leaders have died in Bogra prison alone. Are these deaths due to illness or a planned murder?

Earlier, Shahadat Alam Jhunu, the organizing secretary of Bogra District Awami League and former principal of Police Lines School and College, Shahidul Islam Ratan, the general secretary of Ward No. 15 of Bogra Municipality Awami League, and Abdul Latif, the treasurer of Shibganj Upazila Awami League and general secretary of Upazila Document Writers Association, died while in prison. The latest to die is Abdul Matin Mithu, a member of Gabtoli Upazila Awami League, president of Ward No. 6 branch of Durgahata Union Awami League, and a multiple-time chairman of Durgahata UP.
The cause of death for all of them has been stated to be heart attacks! This is the first time that the countrymen are seeing such a coincidence of heart attacks.

Two Awami League activists have died after being arrested by joint forces in Saghata upazila of Gaibandha. Sohrab Hossain Apel (35) and Shafiqul Islam (45). Their families and relatives allege that they died due to torture by law enforcement agencies. None of the five arrested, including the two deceased, had a case against them. They were arrested only on suspicion. What is more shocking is that the law enforcement agencies also named the two deceased in the case that was later registered.

Sohrab Hossain Apel's wife told local journalists, "The joint forces came to our village, detained five people, including my husband, and began to torture them. My husband died due to their torture. I want justice for his murder."

Meanwhile, two Awami League activists from Gopalganj, Elahi Sikder (25) and Alimuzzaman Chowdhury (58), have died in custody. Both have been accused of torture and medical negligence. Alimuzzaman Chowdhury was arrested while seeking justice at the police station.

Thus, in the last four months, a total of 8 Awami League leaders have died in prison. In each case, there have been incidents of torture and medical negligence. Whether these unusual deaths are planned murders or not will surely come out one day.
