Shahadat Alam Jhunu, the organizing secretary of Bogra District Awami League and former principal of Bogra Police Lines School and College, has died in prison custody.
He died on Tuesday evening.
In this regard, at least three Awami League leaders have died in Bogra prison in the last 16 days.
Jhunu was arrested on August 24 in a murder case, vandalism, and explosives case.
Bogra Jail Superintendent Faruk Ahmed said that all the cases were filed after the July coup.
He said, "Jhunu suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest at the prison hospital around 11:30 am today. Later, he was sent to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. When his physical condition deteriorated further there, attempts were made to take him to Dhaka for better treatment. However, he died on the way after reaching Sirajganj."
Earlier, on November 25, Abdul Latif, treasurer of Shibganj Upazila Awami League in Bogra, died in prison. When he felt unwell on November 23, the jail authorities sent him to Shajimech Hospital. He died on the morning of November 25 while undergoing treatment there, said the jail superintendent.
Awami League leader Shahidul Islam died in Bogra prison on November 11. He was the general secretary of a ward of the Awami League in Bogra city.
When asked about the deaths of several Awami League leaders in prison custody, Faruk said, "They came here suffering from various diseases. We tried to provide them with advanced treatment at the prison hospital."
