US condemns attack on quota protesters

The United States has condemned the attack on students protesting against the abolition of quotas in government jobs, and is monitoring the ongoing situation, said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

He made these remarks in response to a question from reporters at the US State Department's regular briefing on Monday.

During the briefing, the journalist raised the issue of Chhatra League attacks on students even entering universities and hospitals during the ongoing movement in Bangladesh.

The question states that the day after the Prime Minister addressed the protesters demanding quota reform, Chhatra League leaders and activists attacked students. At least 500 students were injured. Chhatra League leaders and activists entered the hospital and attacked the injured students who were receiving treatment in the emergency department. What is your position on the ongoing protests in Bangladesh?

In response, Miller said the United States is aware of the widespread student protests in various places, including Dhaka. "We have learned that two people have been killed and hundreds of protesters have been injured in the attacks so far."

Miller added, "Freedom of expression and peaceful assembly serve as essential foundations for any thriving democracy. We condemn the attacks on peaceful protesters."
