Apurba Pal, a student expelled from the capital's North South University, has confessed to the crime and given a statement in court in a case filed against him for insulting the Quran. On Sunday (October 19), the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah recorded his statement. After that, he was sent to jail.
At that time, the accused voluntarily agreed to give a confessional statement. Then, the investigation officer of the case, Bhatara Police Station Sub-Inspector Chand Mia, requested to record his statement. Earlier, the court granted him a five-day remand on October 14.
On the night of October 4, several videos went viral on Facebook, in which various posts alleged that Apurba Pal had insulted the Quran.
The student's Facebook post was shared and a demand was made for his arrest. Meanwhile, around 1 am, many angry people started gathering in front of Apurba Pal's house. Upon receiving the news, Bhatara police went there and tried to take the student into custody. Initially, the police sought the public's help to arrest him, and the public also assured the police of their help.
At one point, when the police tried to arrest Apurba and bring him to the police station, the agitated crowd started beating him. When the crowd tried to calm them down, they also got angry with the police. When the situation got out of control, additional police personnel were called to the scene. On October 5, Bhatara Police Station Sub-Inspector Hasmat Ali filed a case against him for insulting the Quran. The next day, on October 6, a petition was filed to detain Apurba in jail by showing him as arrested in the case filed in this incident.
That day, the court ordered him to be sent to prison.
