At least 40 people are receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after police attacked students protesting for quota reforms. Several journalists and a police officer are among the injured.
The injured were taken to DMCH Hospital one by one after the clash that took place on Wednesday (July 17) afternoon. Among the injured, two were shot - Afsana Jui (22) of the Population Science Department of Dhaka University and Abdul Hannan Masud (24) of the English Department.
The injured journalists are Jamuna Television's senior reporter Bhaskar Bhaduri, Somoy Television's video journalist Ratan Majumder, Kalbela newspaper's Akram Hossain and Johnny Raihan, Alokot Pratidin's Imran Hossain and several others.
Lalbagh Police Station SI Nazmuzzaman said that Azimpur outpost in-charge (SI) Ibrahim Kholi was going to the outpost from Eden College Gate No. 1 in a rickshaw. On the way, protesters chased him at the gate of Nilkhet Quarter. They started throwing bricks and stones. He was hit on the head.
DMCH Hospital Police Camp In-charge Md. Bachchu Mia said that at least 35 injured people from various areas including DU VC Chattar, TSC, Shahbagh, Nilkhat have come for treatment. Many of the injured have left after receiving treatment. Several are still undergoing treatment.
