Noor's People's Rights Council gets registration

Dhaka University Students' Union (DUCSU) and the People's Rights Party, the party of quota reform movement leader Nurul Haque Nur, have received registration from the Election Commission (EC) as political parties.

This information was given in a notification signed by EC Secretary Shafiul Azim on Monday.

It said that the Bangladesh Election Commission has registered the People's Rights Council (GOP) as a political party until further notice. The truck symbol has been reserved for the said party. The party's registration number is 051.

Nurul Haque, who had been agitating for quota reform in government jobs in 2018, was elected as the VP of DUCSU under the banner of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad. Under his leadership, the political party Gana Adhikar Parishad was formed in October 2021.

At one stage, Dr. Reza Kibria, son of former Awami League Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria, joined the party as its convener. However, within two years of the party's formation, a dispute arose between the top two leaders, Reza Kibria and Nurul Haque.

At a meeting of the party's central committee on July 1, 2023, Nurul Haque's followers removed Reza Kibria from the post of convener. However, there were reports of an agreement between the two parties surrounding the 12th parliamentary elections.
