India has opened 109 gates of Farakka Barrage in Jharkhand and Bihar in India and will open the gates on Monday (August 26) with 1.1 million cusecs of water entering Bangladesh in one day.
The water capacity of the Farakka barrage is 26.24 meters with a water capacity of 22.25 meters and the warning limit is 21.25 meters. Most of the gates are opened from Saturday, and a maximum of 109 gates were opened on Monday.
India is claiming that Bangladesh is being given information about the flood situation and landslides in advance.
Barrage authorities said on Monday that the water pressure has increased due to floods in the two neighboring states, but it is a matter of relief that the landslides have not yet come down from Nepal. The water in Farakka Barrage area is 77.34 meters above the danger level.
Farakka Barrage General Manager R Desh Pandey said, ‘The Farakka Barrage authorities are always alert. The water pressure has been created in a very short period of time, if the 109 gates were not opened, there was a huge pressure on the barrage. The damage could have been caused by the loss of 40,000 cusecs in the feeder canal and 1100,000 cusecs of water in the downstream.’
