“Rooppur corruption investigation” designed to harass Sheikh Hasina and her family

The so-called “Rooppur corruption investigation” is essentially a disinformation campaign, designed to spread misinformation and harassment against the former Prime Minister and his family.

Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which was recently reconstituted by the interim government led by Dr. Yunus and includes pro-government and BNP-affiliated members, has decided to investigate allegations of alleged corruption in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project (RNPP). The allegations claim to involve around US$5 billion (about Tk 59,000 crore), naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed and her nephew Tulip Siddique, among others.

There is no real information or evidence behind these so-called corruption allegations and it is part of a deliberate propaganda campaign, the sole purpose of which is to harass the former Prime Minister and his family members and to conduct a trial in the media with false information.

The ACC's move comes after a writ petition was filed in the High Court by Bobby Hajjaj, the head of a political party close to the BNP. The allegation was based on a report published in the daily Kalerkanth on October 14, 2024, which in turn was based on a so-called "report" by a dubious and opaque website, "The Global Defense Corporation—GDC," on August 17, 2024. The credibility of this so-called allegation depends solely on the GDC, which is in reality completely unreliable.

It should be noted that although the name “The Global Defense Corporation” is similar to the name of a reputable US security company, Global Defense Corp, it is completely different and is intended to confuse. A visit to the website (https://www.globaldefensecorp.com/) clearly shows that it is a shell website, created to disseminate misleading information against strategic targets.

An investigation by The Dhaka Tribune (DTT) has revealed that the so-called “report” contains basic spelling errors, such as “slush funds” being written as “slash funds”. The source behind the website is also unclear. DTT has revealed in its investigation that the website is registered by Privacy Project LLC, and that no office named “Global Defense Corporation” exists at the address provided.

Also, regarding the joint project of Bangladesh and the Russian national nuclear agency Rosatom on the Rooppur project, Rosatom issued a statement on August 19, 2024, clearly rejecting any allegations of corruption in the project. They noted that this “report” was created to tarnish the reputation of the project and they will take legal action to protect their honor.

On September 3, 2024, Rosatom issued another statement explaining why the cost of the Rooppur project is higher than the Indian project. Although the GDC report compares the cost to India, there is a logical explanation for this cost.

Political analysts say that behind such baseless allegations is the government's attempt to influence the judiciary and the media. This government is implementing a misleading agenda by putting pressure on judges and taking away the freedom of the media.
