According to the index, the largest number of poor people in the world live in India. Out of the country's 140 million population, 23.4 million are in extreme poverty. This is followed by Pakistan (9.3 million), Ethiopia (86 million), Nigeria (74 million) and the Republic of Congo (66 million). Half of the world's most poverty-stricken population is inhabited by these five countries.
