Supreme Judicial Council returns power to remove judges
The Supreme Court Judicial Council has finally regained the power to remove judges. Upholding the much-discussed 16th Amendment to the Constitution, a 6-judge appeal bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed gave the order on Sunday (October 20). The lawyers said that the Appellate Division has disposed of the review petition filed against the Appellate Division's verdict declaring the 16th Amendment to the Constitution invalid and null and void by bringing the power to remove judges into the hands of members of parliament. As a result, the power to remove judges of the high court has now returned to the hands of the 'Supreme Judicial Council'.
