Chaos broke out yesterday as furious protesters gathered to condemn what they describe as a blasphemous attack on Islam by a controversial female blogger, Tahmina Ferdous.
The protest, spearheaded by the Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir, accused the blogger of crossing all red lines of religious tolerance. The blogger operates www.articlechoice.com, which the protesters claim is highly critical of Jamaat-e-Islami, including allegations linking its members to paedophilia.
However, the protesters' primary fury was directed at the blogger's posts questioning the authenticity of specific hadith concerning the age of marriage. The posts link these religious texts to widespread child abuse and suggest clerics use these narratives to shield themselves.
Chhatra Shibir and others are calling for her death, branding her a "kafir" for allegedly suggesting the Prophet Muhammad was a paedophile due to his marriage to Aisha.
