Crowds gathered yesterday in the capital to condemn a blog post that targets the prophet Muhammad and prominent Bangladeshi religious organisations as paedophiles.
The post, published on https://thefreespeech.net, accused several Islamic groups of using outdated teachings of the prophet Muhammad to commit sexual abuse. Protesters have condemned the rejection of prophetic hadith, and attacks on the prophet’s character, as blasphemy.
The situation is escalating rapidly, with protesters demanding severe punishment for the blogger. Video footage shows crowds burning images said to be of Afzal Hussan and chanting slogans calling for his death.
Officials are currently assessing whether the article breaches digital-speech or public order laws.
